'Aurora' is an innovative handheld kaleidoscope by Japanese artist Chikako Ishida. The body is made of a completely smooth single glass piece that has elegant fluting on the inside, with a reflective silvery film laid beneath, giving it a brilliant shine. This is a 2-mirror, 7-point system with a dry and non-turning, front and side lit, enclosed, MULTI-LAYERED, object chamber; one layer is filled with delicate pieces of handmade lampwork glass in a variety of colors, next is a slice of translucent frosted white glass, followed by a layer of crumpled polarized birefringent film (which changes colors depending on how light hits it) and a few small pieces of clear glass, and finally, a slice of highly textured clear glass attached to the very top of the chamber. This scope creates soft, elegant, and lovely "mandala-style" kaleidoscopic imagery. Scope measures approximately 6"L x 2"W.
NOTE: As an example of how the polarized birefringent film effects the imagery, the first six internal image photos show the exact same kaleidoscopic image, only the direction of the light source has changed.
