"Spalted Wood Kaleidoscopes" are lovely handheld scopes by artist Benjamin Birdsill. The body of these scopes are made with wood that has been spalted, this is natural dark colorations which are caused by fungus over long periods of time. Benjamin create his "spalted" scopes in three different wood/mirror combinations;
- Spalted Hackberry/Walnut, 3-Mirror, 6-Point
- Spalted Maple/Walnut, 3-Mirror, 5-Point
- Spalted Tamarind/Walnut, 2-Mirror, 5-Point
Each of these scopes have turning, oil-filled, black background object cells containing handmade glasswork pieces in bright colors, dichoric glass bits, wires, and other sparkly items which create flowing, gorgeous kaleidoscope imagery. These measure approximately 7"L - 7.5"L x 2.25" Diameter at the cell end and come with a wood stand as shown in photos.
