"Gear Drive #4" is a one-of-a-kind motor drive kaleidoscope by J.R. Beall. This scope is made of old Figured Maple with Ebony trim. Scope has a counter rotating barrel and object case and uses a 12 volt motor powered by a DC converter. The barrel of the scope rotates in one direction and the object case rotates in the opposite direction. The removable object case can be opened to install whatever objects the viewer desires, it is mounted on three ball bearings and held in place with neodymium magnets. Creation of his scope started in 2002 and was completed in 2003. This is a 2-mirror 8-point system, the object case is dry, side-lit and end-lit, and contains lampworked glass, fluid-filled ampules and millefiori. This scope on the stand measures 16"T x 12" x 12". The barrel of the scope is 11"L x 3-1/2" in diameter. Signed by the artist and dated 2003.
