Product Details

"Katagami" series handheld kaleidoscopes by Japanese artist Yasuko Nakazato. Katagami are paper stencils traditionally used in the dyeing of fabric for kimono and other garments, these were brought to Europe and America in the second half of the nineteenth centruy. These beautiful Japanese designs and technical refinement were so impressive they had a huge influence on arts and crafts overseas. Yasuko Nakazato uses these traditional paper stencils and Washi paper under clear glass, to create beautiful kaleidoscope bodies, with each one becoming a unique work of art. These scopes come with either a modified 3-mirror or 2-mirror system, and have a turning, oil-filled cell containing handmade lampworked glass pieces which produce detailed imagery in rich colors. They measure approximately 8 1/4"L x 3 1/4"W x 3/4"T and are signed by the artist (Yasuko).
