'Long Tailed Tit' is an adorable little handheld kaleidoscope by (new to Nellie Bly) Japanese artist Mutsumi Uga. Each is uniquely created in glass and is individually different from the others. The body showcases sets of cute little Tit birds, perched on branches, and house 3-Mirror systems. The object sphere is non-turning, oil-filled, and contains gorgeous handmade lampwork glass bits and pieces and are fun to look into themselves, much like a little snow-globe is, but when you peek into the viewing port and turn the scope, you'll be treated to a dazzling show of "full-view" kaleidoscopic imagery that will delight anyone lucky enough to watch these birds! Each one is OOAK as they all vary slightly. Measure approximately 4.5"L x 1.5"W at the sphere end.
- Mutsumi Uga is a celebrated Japanese glass and kaleidoscope artist. Renowned for her signature "core glass" (pâte de verre) bodies, she frequently uses ancient Mesopotamian techniques to craft her kaleidoscopic tubes, earning her international acclaim, including at the 2017 Kaleidoscope World Convention in Kyoto.
- From the artist; About 15 years ago, I discovered glass beads and spent my days making them from morning till night. During that time, I encountered kaleidoscopes and began making them under the guidance of the late Mr. Kirishiki.
Glass beads and kaleidoscopes. At first glance, they seem unrelated, but after learning about a technique called core glassmaking, I started making something by combining them. It's a very time-consuming technique where only one piece can be made from a single mold.
Although I have no prior experience, I was fortunate enough to participate in the BKS (Brewster Kaleidoscope Society) Kyoto competition, which gave me a little confidence. I intend to continue creating things carefully, one step at a time.
