'Phantasmic Stratums' is a spectacular, 35 year old (RARE - COLLECTORS ALERT), contemporary, sculptural parlor kaleidoscope by American artist and scope creating legend, Steven Gray. Limited to a series of only 25, this absolutely magnificent work of art was created in Black Walnut with Gabon Ebony wood detailing and accents. The object cell is large, turning, dry, filled with handmade lampwork glass pieces, and has a light diffusing white background. There is an attached, angle-adjustable, square mirror below the object cell that is to be used to reflect light into the chamber for illuminating the imagery. Linear spacing is the theme of this piece as the inner chamber features multi-layers of floating honeycomb weave, "stratums" repeated to incredible visual depths, with ever changing, colorful kaleidoscopic images on their surfaces, by way of only 5 mirrors. Side note: The camera could only focus on the near imagery OR the far imagery while shooting the internals, image was limited as seen in photos, but rest assured, your eyes are able to see the MUCH larger picture and the full effect this scope produces. Measures approximately 16"T x 17"D x 6.75"W. Numbered (#7/25), dated (©1991), and signed (Steven J. Gray) by the artist.
