"Pyrite-Sun On Slate" is a delightful parlor kaleidoscope by Steve Failows. The kaleidoscope body is ceramic with a glossy black glaze, which compliments the genuine Slate base. There is a tapered, 3-mirror system which produces wonderful 3-D spherical imagery. This scope has dual stained glass object wheels (approximately 4" diameter) and an unusually large viewing port, allowing for comfortable veiwing with both eyes. The actual scope itself is approximately 9 1/2"L x 8"W x 3" at the eyepeice end. The base of this parlor scope is genuine Slate with a shimmery, genuine Pyrite-Sun embedded on top, base measures approximately 12 1/2"L x 8"W.
Pyrite-Sun may look like fossilized plants, but the crystal structures actually formed deep underground under great pressure about 350 million years ago. Suns are the rarest form of concretionary pyrite. Most pyrite-sun specimens, including the largest and finest, come from the vicinity of Sparta, Illinois, near the center of the vast Illinois Coal Basin.
