'Spalted Wood' are lovely handheld scopes by American artist Benjamin Birdsill. The body was made with wood that has been "spalted" which is a natural dark colorations caused by fungus over long periods of time. Benjamin creates his spalted scopes in various different wood/mirror combinations, for example;
- Spalted Hackberry/Walnut, 3-Mirror, 6-Point
- Spalted Maple/Walnut, 3-Mirror, 5-Point
- Spalted Maple/Walnut, 2-Mirror/7-Point
- Spalted Tamarind/Walnut, 2-Mirror, 5-Point
- Spalted Tamarind/Walnut, 2-Mirror, 6-Point
Each of these scopes have turning, oil-filled, black background object cells containing handmade glasswork pieces in bright colors, dichroic (color shifting) glass bits, wires, and other sparkly items which together create flowing, gorgeous kaleidoscope imagery. Each measure approximately 7"L - 7.5"L x 2.25" Diameter at the cell end and come with a wood stand. Scope is initialed (B) by the artist.
