'Tidepool' is an incredible (COLLECTORS ALERT) sculptural parlor kaleidoscope by American artist David Collier. The body was constructed from handcrafted, turned hardwoods, with multi-layered levels of intrigue. The base level is actually an open-air (not enclosed), turn table for the objects to set onto. It has a translucent frosted glass surface with interesting, colorful, line art lying beneath it, becoming the background for the images you'll see. At the front of the base is a knob, pull it out and you have a mini-flashlight, turn it on and place it back in the slot to ILLUMINATE the scope from within the base, how cool is that! The next layer up is a compartment with a lid where David's beautiful handmade lamp-worked glass pieces are safely stored. These pieces are made in a full rainbow of colors that fun, funky shapes which make for some interesting, unusual images. Finally, the scope itself tops off the piece, with it's rotating viewing port, complete with a lid to keep dust from the lens while not in use. Simply add and remove pieces to alter the kaleidoscopic imagery created. I used a few pieces of each color available for the internal photos shown here, but you can customize the images you create by adding only warm colors or only the primary colors, etc ... the possibilities are endless! NOTE: Due to it's age (25 y/o) and changes in humidity, there is a slight split in the wood base, where the flashlight is stored as seen in photos, this does not effect the magic of the piece.
